The Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU) has urged the Delta State Government to urgently implement the 2025 Federal Government–ASUU Agreement, warning that continued delay could trigger an industrial action, capable of disrupting the academic calendar.

The warning was given on Thursday, July 16, 2026, when members of the National Executive Council (NEC) of ASUU paid a courtesy visit to the Vice-Chancellor of the University of Delta (UNIDEL), Agbor, Professor Eric Eboh, at the University’s Council Chamber.

Leading the delegation, Comrade Happiness Uduk said the visit was aimed at engaging the University leadership on the lingering non-implementation of the 2025 agreement by the Delta State Government, despite the fact that federal and some state universities were already implementing the Agreement.

She expressed concern that while lecturers in many public universities were benefiting from the agreement, their counterparts in Delta State-owned universities remained excluded, a development she said could negatively affect staff morale, productivity and industrial harmony.

Uduk appealed to the Vice-Chancellor to deepen democratic governance within the university by ensuring that Heads of Departments emerged through transparent elections rather than through direct appointment by the University Management.

She further called on Professor Eboh to work closely with other Vice-Chancellors in Delta State to engage the state government with a view to securing implementation of the agreement on or before 31st July, 2026, warning that failure to do so could compel the Union to declare an industrial action.

Responding, Professor Eboh thanked the ASUU leadership for the visit and commended the Union for its unwavering commitment to advancing the welfare of academics and the development of Nigeria’s university system. He disclosed that efforts were underway to resolve the 2025 Federal Government – ASUU Agreement, revealing that Vice-Chancellors of state-owned universities in Delta were working collectively to engage the state government.

He expressed confidence that constructive dialogue between stakeholders would produce a favourable outcome, assuring the Union that every legitimate effort was being made to facilitate early implementation of the agreement.

Other members of the ASUU delegation included Comrade L. M. Igbafe, Coordinator, ASUU Benin Zone; Comrade Simon Ehiabi, Comrade Omeh Ngwoke, Comrade Enaruna Edosa, while the Chairman of ASUU, University of Delta Chapter, Comrade Amaechi Ehimatie was present with Chapter the Executive members.
