Agbor Fire Incident: There Must Be Discipline on Our Roads ~ DESTMA Chairman

The Chairman of Delta State Traffic Management Authority, DESTMA, Chief Peter Idion, has stressed the need for discipline on the roads of Delta State, following a recent tragic fire incident that claimed lives and razed down properties recently at Mobil Filling Station, Agbor, Delta State of Nigeria

The DESTMA Boss who doubles as Chief Adolor Dein of Agbor Kingdom, made this statement during his inspection of the fire disaster that occurred on January 5, 2025.

Expressing his deep sorrow over the fire, which was caused by a tanker carrying Automated Gas Oil, AGO, Chief Idion underscored the importance of road discipline in the state, stating that adherence to traffic rules is the only effective way to prevent such accidents and the casualties that result from reckless driving.

He called for a collective effort to ensure strict compliance with traffic regulations to safeguard lives and properties on Delta’s roads.

The DESTMA Chairman also extended his gratitude to Governor Sheriff Oborevwori, who was represented by Deputy Governor Sir Monday Onyeme, and acompanied by the Secretary to the State Government Dr. Kinsley Emu, Dr. Festus Okubor, Hon. Marilyn Okowa Daramola, Engr. Jerry Ehiwario, and Odigwe Monday for their proactive roles in responding to the incident.

Chief Idion urged motorists and motorcyclists to strictly observe traffic laws to prevent further accidents.

In a show of solidarity, representatives of the revered Dein of Agbor Kingdom, led by Chief Ogwu, Chief Kester Utebor, Chief Wilson Onih, Chief Oghonim Akaraka, Chief Aje, Chief Ifeanyi Aghalor, and many others expressed their grief and extended condolences to the victims’ families just as they prayed for the peaceful repose of those who died in the devastating fire.

Governor Oborevwori also conveyed his heartfelt condolences to the victims’ families just as he assured the affected families of the state’s full support, emphasizing that the State Ministry of Health, the State Emergency Management Agency, and other relevant authorities would provide immediate assistance to all victims.

Governor Oborevwori expressed his appreciation for the swift response of the Fire Service, the people of Ika South Local Government, and the security agencies in preventing the fire from causing more harm just as he reaffirmed his administration’s commitment to the welfare of the people of Delta State.

In response to the incident, Mr. Sunny Omoruyi, one of the affected shop owners and a representative of the traders, thanked the Governor for his support. He also appealed for assistance to help mitigate the losses incurred due to the devastating fire.

The DESTMA Boss in his remarks said,” This tragic incident serves as a stark reminder of the importance of road safety and the need for stricter enforcement of traffic regulations to prevent such disasters in the future.”
