Asaba, Delta State — The Delta State Commissioner for Economic Planning, Mr. Sonny Ekedeyen, has reaffirmed the state government’s confidence in community newspapers, highlighting their crucial role in grassroot communication and policy dissemination.
Speaking during a recent meeting with publishers held in Asaba, Mr. Ekedeyen emphasized that local publications were uniquely positioned near the grassroots to effectively drive government policies, programs, and civic engagement across communities.
He noted a persistent information gap, categorizing citizens into those genuinely uninformed about government policy and those targeted by misleading narratives.
Addressing concerns over public finance, the Commissioner explained that the elimination of subsidy-related corruption has allowed the government to fund expenditures without resorting to borrowing, while simultaneously creating a favorable climate for foreign and local investors.
On fiscal performance, Mr. Ekedeyen disclosed that Delta State’s budget implementation currently stands at approximately 75%, with projections expected to exceed 80% by December.
He added that the recent Delta State Economic Summit in Asaba successfully positioned the state on the global stage, attracting prospective investors from around the world.
Optimistic about national recovery, the Commissioner praised ongoing federal economic reforms for tackling long-standing structural issues and setting the country on a path toward sustainable growth.
He urged community publishers to partner actively with the administration in bringing these vital updates to local audiences.
Responding on behalf of the publishers, the Senior Special Assistant to the Delta State Governor on Community Newspapers, Hon. Prince Joseph Oromoni, assured the Commissioner of the media’s readiness to collaborate with the state government.
He reiterated that local publishers remain committed to advancing Governor Sheriff Oborevwori’s MORE Agenda by ensuring transparent, timely reporting at the grassroots level
