PRESS RELEASE

A Clarion Call to End Extrajudicial Killings and Brutality by Security Operatives in Nigeria

The Civil Rights Council of Nigeria, a non-governmental organization committed to the rule of law, democracy, human rights, and accountability, strongly condemns the extrajudicial killing of 28-year-old Oghenemine Ogidi.

The act was allegedly carried out by “trigger-happy” security operatives attached to the Effurun Area Command in Delta State.

Oghenemine Ogidi, a rising artist, had gone to a motor park to collect a waybill on behalf of a friend based in Sapele. According to police reports, the waybill contained a firearm.

Without conducting a proper investigation, Oghenemine was reportedly bound and executed by ASP Usman Nuhu and his team.

This occurred despite the victim’s pleas and his expressed willingness to lead the officers to the owner of the package in Sapele.

This tragedy follows a disturbing trend in the State

January 2026: SOS Commander Liberty Okunu was allegedly killed by the Delta State Police Command under the guise of recovering hidden firearms.

While the police claimed he was killed by gang members during a rescue attempt, no independent investigation has verified this claim. As the saying goes, “The dead cannot speak.”

Such acts of lawlessness and impunity subvert the Constitution of the Federal Republic of Nigeria 1999 (as amended), specifically:
Section 33 (Right to Life): No individual or state actor may intentionally take a life except in the execution of a court sentence.

Section 36 (Right to Fair Hearing): Every citizen is presumed innocent until proven guilty by an independent court of law.

The Civil Rights Council of Nigeria calls upon the Federal Government and the Inspector General of Police, Olatunji Rilwan Disu, to:

Investigate and Prosecute: Ensure ASP Usman Nuhu and all officers involved in the killing of Oghenemine Ogidi are brought to justice in accordance with the law.

Conduct a total overhaul and transfer of officers within the Delta State Police Command.

Ensure all pending case files of police misconduct are vetted for immediate action.

The Civil Rights Council remains steadfast in its responsibility to uphold the rights of every citizen. We will not relent until justice is served.

All Lives Matter.

Signed, Comr. Joy Edigbine (Small Pepper) Coordinator, Civil Rights Council, Delta State, Nigeria
