The true value of a person is often reflected in their leadership abilities and how effectively they utilize their resources for the benefit of their community. While titles alone may not always convey one’s true impact, it is the demonstration of internal qualities and character that truly matters.

This is evident, as external attributes are merely reflections of internal factors—what can be described as a natural impulse. I, like many others, believe that leadership is an inherent quality, shaped by nature for future roles. However, another perspective suggests that leadership is developed through experience, arguing that no one is born a leader.

Having observed various leaders, I challenge this latter view, using Hon. (Barr) Marilyn Okowa Daramola as a case study. As the first female Youth Representative of Ika North East Constituency in the Delta State House of Assembly, Hon. Marilyn Okowa Daramola has demonstrated a remarkable commitment to making a positive impact, both within and beyond her constituency.

The Owa-Alero-born philanthropist and seasoned administrator has facilitated job creation and empowerment opportunities for her constituents during her first year in office. As a journalist who has covered her activities, I can confidently assert that Hon. Marilyn Okowa Daramola stands out as a leader dedicated to alleviating the struggles of many through her initiatives and legislative efforts.

Recently, Hon. Marilyn Okowa Daramola sponsored a bill against discrimination of persons with disabilities and advocated for the establishment of a dedicated ministry for their care. This bill gained traction due to its potential to create equal opportunities for individuals with disabilities.

Additionally, on Women’s Day, she empowered around four hundred women with financial support to alleviate the economic hardships exacerbated by the current national climate and to bolster their businesses. Such acts exemplify the qualities of a prepared leader, one who not only has a passion for leadership but also a genuine desire to support the less privileged.

Hon. Marilyn Okowa Daramola is proactive and dedicated, responding promptly to the needs of her people. Her office is always open to individuals seeking assistance. She is often referred to as the “Mother of the Needy,” guided by the principle “My People First.” This principle fuels her commitment to ensuring her constituents’ happiness and success.

Rather than flaunting her values as mere symbols, she brings them to life through her tireless efforts to meet the needs of her people.

Therefore, I urge our community and the people of Delta State to provide unwavering support to continue advancing her leadership agenda, which prioritizes the welfare of our people.
