In a striking demonstration of community care and proactive leadership, philanthropist and Nigeria Democratic Party (NDC) candidate, for the Ika South House Of Assembly seat, Mrs. Ogor Tony-Obuh, yesterday inspected the ongoing drainage clearing project at Agbor-Obi, directly opposite the Royal Palace.
The inspection, which took place on Saturday, June 20, 2026, underscores her commitment to environmental sustainability and public health within the community.
During her assessment of the site, Mrs. Tony-Obuh lamented the severely blocked gutters, noting that stagnant water posed an immediate threat to the lives of residents.
She emphasized that such blockages serve as breeding grounds for mosquitoes, drastically increasing the incidence of malaria and other waterborne diseases in the neighborhood.
“We cannot fold our arms and watch preventable health hazards threaten our people,” Tony-Obuh stated. “The primary goal of clearing this drainage is to ensure a smooth, unobstructed flow of water, which will ultimately mitigate the risks of severe flooding and subsequent erosion that may plague the area during the rainy season.”
Ogor Tony-obuh urged both the government and local residents to adopt a culture of environmental discipline, stressing that the habit of dumping household waste into gutters must stop to prevent future blockages and protect public infrastructure.
She called on the Ministry of Environment and Bureau of Orientation to step up its efforts, insisting the ministry must prioritize public sensitization campaigns to educate citizens and reshape their mindsets regarding proper waste disposal.
Beyond orientation, she challenged the ministry to expedite actions on environmental safety initiatives, and enforce compliance with existing environmental laws.
The Ika South Constituency NDC candidate emphasised the need for the ministry of environment to Strengthen follow-up mechanisms to ensure cleared drainages remain unobstructed.
While speaking, Mrs. Tony-Obuh commended local stakeholders for what she described as their “proactive disposition” and unwavering commitment to monitoring the drainage clearance.
She maintained that a sustained partnership between the community, the government, and regulatory bodies remains the only definitive way to keep the environment safe and habitable for all.
