The Joint Admissions and Matriculation Board (JAMB) has explained how candidates seeking admission into tertiary institutions can verify the approved O’Level and Unified Tertiary Matriculation Examination (UTME) subject requirements for their preferred courses.
The Board warned that candidates could lose admission opportunities despite obtaining good UTME scores and O’Level results if their subject combinations do not meet the specific requirements of their chosen institutions and programmes.
JAMB gave the advisory through its JAMB Explained platform on X on Friday, urging prospective candidates to confirm their subject combinations before selecting courses or making changes to their admission choices.
“Do you know that your subject combination might be the reason you don’t get admitted? You can have good scores in the UTME and O-Level results and still not be eligible for admission,” the Board stated.
To help candidates avoid such mistakes, JAMB directed them to its Integrated Brochure and Syllabus System (IBASS) portal www.ibass.jamb.gov.ng, where they can access approved admission requirements for different institutions and academic programmes.
The Board outlined the steps candidates should follow to check the requirements.
First, candidates are required to visit the IBASS website and click on the brochure section.
They should then select the option to view all institutions and use the institution filter to locate their preferred university, polytechnic or college of education.
After selecting their preferred institution, candidates are expected to choose their desired course and click on the “View Details” option to access the admission requirements.
According to JAMB, the information provided includes the approved O’Level subject requirements and the UTME subject combination for the selected programme.
Candidates are advised to carefully examine the requirements, confirm that their O’Level subjects and grades meet the stipulated conditions and ensure that their UTME subject combinations are correct.
The Board emphasised that checking the requirements before making admission choices would help candidates avoid errors that could affect their eligibility.
JAMB reiterated that meeting the specific subject requirements of their chosen institutions and programmes remains essential for admission consideration, irrespective of candidates’ performance in UTME and O’Level examinations.
