A growing controversy is unfolding within the APC leadership of Ika South Local Government Area over the disbursement of a recent state financial intervention.
Delta State Governor Sheriff Oborevwori recently released ₦20 million to each local government councillor as their share of the state’s excess allocation resulting from subsidy removal and increased tax revenue.
Despite Local Government Chairmen receiving allocations in the range of #700 million, local political leaders have reportedly pressured the councillors—who received a comparatively modest ₦20 million each—to surrender half of their funds.
Under this directive, councillors are expected to distribute ₦10 million to party loyalists, leaving them with only ₦10 million for their own execution of ward responsibilities.
Sources indicate that Ika South APC leadership compiled a list of approximately 200 party members per ward, each slated to receive ₦50,000—a total payout of ₦10 million per ward.
However, insider accounts reveal a stark double standard in how these funds are being monitored
The Ika South Chairman identified as Mrs. Glory reportedly received around ₦30 million without any demand to share her funds with party members.
Another figure, referred to as Mrs. Glory Onyeagbor was reportedly advised by the Ika South local Government Chairman to use her full allocation to complete her personal home before her tenure ends, while the councillors are forced to treat their allocation as political largesse.
This development follows the recent conclusion of a similar ₦50,000 empowerment initiative involving 200 individuals in Ika North East, having Ika South to commence its own exercises this Thursday.
Speaking on condition of anonymity, a councilor expressed frustration over the pressure being applied to the councilors
“The same way Ika North East councillors were forced to yield their money, they want to collect Ika South councillors’ money.
Only the councillors are being forced to distribute their funds like this—their hands are being arm-twisted.”
