The Anambra State chapter of the Peoples Democratic Party, PDP, has formally invited its former prominent member, Mr. Peter Obi, to rejoin the party in preparation for the 2027 general elections.
This public appeal, issued during a stakeholders’ meeting in Awka, signals a strategic effort to foster opposition unity aimed at challenging the incumbent All Progressives Congress, APC
PDP leaders emphasized Obi’s enduring influence as a political heavyweight from the Southeast, contending that his return would substantially boost the party’s national standing and strengthen the region’s political leverage.
Recent History and Potential Implications
It’s worth recalling the significant support Mr. Peter Obi garnered support from PDP youths, who had advocated for him to receive the presidential ticket, even leading to protests at the PDP national office in Abuja.
It was also gathered that Mr. Obi’s strong performance in the last presidential election, particularly his victories across the South-South geopolitical zone, proved challenging for the PDP.
Investigation revealed that the defection currently hitting the PDP is linked to Atiku Abubakar who was the Party’s standard bearer, meaning that the Party wanted power to remain in the North after an eight-year presidential term by a northern leader.
