Ile-Ife, Osun State – The Ooni of Ife, Oba Enitan Ogunwusi, has urged Nigerian universities to undertake a comprehensive study of the political strategies employed by Nyesom Ezenwo Wike, the current Minister of the Federal Capital Territory.
Speaking at the 2025 OAU Distinguished Personality Lecture, where Wike was the keynote speaker, the revered monarch described Wike’s consistent political relevance and his unexpected inclusion in President Bola Tinubu’s cabinet as a “phenomenon worthy of academic study.”
Oba Ogunwusi lauded President Tinubu for his foresight in bringing Wike, a prominent figure from an opposing political party, into his government. “I give great honor to the father of the nation, President Bola Tinubu. Despite belonging to different political parties, you have found a way to work together,” the Ooni stated.
He further emphasized the enigmatic nature of Wike’s political trajectory, remarking, “Your presence in this government remains a mystery, one that universities should seriously examine.”
The Ooni acknowledged the contentious aspects of Wike’s political career but highlighted his undeniable resilience and boldness. “Whether you like him or not, Wike has been politically relevant for over two decades and deserves to be studied,” he asserted.
“Though not everyone may agree with him, many respect his courage. Nigeria belongs to all of us, and Wike is making his mark in the nation’s history.”
The event drew a distinguished audience, including the Minister of Finance and Coordinating Minister of the Economy, Wale Edun, and former governors Ifeanyi Ugwuanyi of Enugu State and Samuel Ortom of Benue State.
Recall that Wike’s political journey includes serving as governor of Rivers State from May 2015 to May 2023, followed by his appointment as Minister of the Federal Capital Territory in August 2023.
His open support for President Tinubu’s potential 2027 re-election bid has drawn significant criticism from within his own party, the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), with some members accusing him of anti-party activities.
Synchronizing the above with emphasis, Wike was able to maneuver his political platforms despite the internal party turmoil, and was also not only relevant but has remained steadfast, even openly challenging his party leadership and actively shaping intra-party dynamics.
