The Chairman of the Delta State Traffic Management Authority, DESTMA, Chief Peter Idion, has emphasized the agency’s commitment to aligning its operations with the “MORE” agenda of Governor Sheriff Oborevwori, prioritizing road safety and efficient traffic management.
During a visit to the Delta State Police Command in Asaba, Chief Idion, highlighted the crucial importance of a strong working relationship with the police in ensuring road safety for all citizens of delta state and those living in the state
He reaffirmed DESTMA’s dedication to enforcing traffic rules and regulations while ensuring fair and just punishment for offenders.
In response, Commissioner of Police Oluwafemi Abaniwonda expressed the command’s unwavering support for DESTMA’s efforts.
He emphasized that both traffic compliance and overall security were integral to Governor Oborevwori’s administration just as he stressed the importance of collaborative efforts from all stakeholders to achieve tangible results.
The CP urged DESTMA to prioritize public sensitization campaigns before implementing strict enforcement measures disclosing the pivotal role public awareness could play in fostering a culture of voluntary compliance amongst road users.
“We will fully support your efforts and work closely with you,” the CP stated. “However, it is essential to develop well-defined plans to ensure the most effective outcomes.”
Chief Idion expressed gratitude for the CP’s support and guidance. He reiterated that Governor Oborevwori has placed a strong emphasis on saving lives, recognizing the paramount importance of road safety.
“DESTMA is committed to protecting the lives of our citizens by diligently enforcing traffic rules and regulations,” Chief Idion declared.
“We will ensure that all necessary measures are in place to facilitate a smooth and productive working relationship with the police.”
Earlier, DESTMA Director General, Hon. Dr. Benjamin Okiemute, informed CP Abaniwonda about the agency’s current operational scope, which covers seven local government areas: Asaba, Agbor, Uvwie, Warri, Sapele, Udu, and Ughelli.
The DG further highlighted Governor Oborevwori’s directive to expand DESTMA’s operations to all 25 local government areas of the state, which will increase the operations of the agency
Dr. Okiemute also mentioned that DESTMA was currently undergoing a rebranding process and requested the police’s assistance in training DESTMA officers both in music and other paramilitary activities
“We seek your valuable assistance in enforcing traffic rules,” Dr. Okiemute stated. “We will work together to develop effective strategies to improve road safety across the state.”
