As the 2027 general election approaches, Darlington Okonma, coordinator of DELTA DECIDES, has publicly accused former Vice President Atiku Abubakar of consistently undermining the People’s Democratic Party (PDP) and the principle of a Southern presidency.
Okonma stated that the PDP’s recent electoral misfortunes, particularly in the last presidential election, can be attributed to Atiku Abubakar’s decision to contest despite it being the turn of the South to produce the party’s presidential candidate.
He emphasised Atiku Abubakar’s actions in the last election was the same reason he mobilized five Governors that worked against President Goodluck Jonathan in the 2015 Presidential election
“The same thing he worked against our brother, Goodluck Jonathan for, was the same thing he wanted to do in the last presidential election.”
Okonma further alleged that Atiku Abubakar has a pattern of “destroying” political parties, suggesting the African Democratic Congress (ADC) might be his next target.
He urged Nigerians to be wary of Atiku, labeling him as “anti-good governance.”
Emphasizing what he described as Atiku Abubakar’s “clandestine motives,”
Okonma claimed Atiku was a significant contributor to Nigeria’s current challenges, attributing them to his alleged role in laying a “poor foundation” and looting the national treasury for all his life
Okonma highlighted that figures like Nyesom Wike recognized Atiku’s “evil motive” to thwart the Southern ambition for power, which is why Wike is seen by many as a hero for standing against Atiku.
“Now he is already saying that he would not step down for any Southern President, meaning that the ADC is in trouble,” Okonma added.
He noted that Atiku’s refusal to step down for the likes of Mr. Peter Obi suggests that his continued pursuit of the presidency poses a threat to the ADC’s stability and the broader aspiration for a Southern president.
