The President of the Senate, Godswill Akpabio, today expressed strong support for the proposed creation of Anioma State, stating that the initiative could be actualised under the administration of Bola Ahmed Tinubu.

Akpabio made this known while addressing stakeholders at the South-South Zonal Congress of the All Progressives Congress (APC), held in Asaba, the Delta State capital.

The Senate President, who appeared at the event dressed in traditional Anioma attire, described the proposed state creation as a strategic move that would enhance development and strengthen representation in the region. His attire was widely interpreted as a symbolic show of solidarity with the Anioma people and their long-standing demand for statehood.

Speaking on the structure of the proposed arrangement, Akpabio noted that Anioma State, would be situated in the South East geopolitical zone, with Asaba as its capital. He added that Delta State would retain Warri as its capital.

The Anioma State proposal has been actively championed by Senator Prince Ned Nwoko, who represents Delta North Senatorial District. The initiative has continued to generate debate across political and regional lines, particularly regarding issues of identity, administrative restructuring, and equitable development.

Akpabio emphasized that the creation of Anioma State would open up opportunities for infrastructural growth, economic expansion, and improved governance in the affected areas. He called on stakeholders across Delta State and the broader South-South region to collaborate in advancing the proposal.

He further assured Governor Sheriff Oborevwori that the demand for Anioma State would soon be realised, reiterating the commitment of the current administration to addressing longstanding structural concerns within the federation.

The South-South Zonal APC Congress drew high-profile attendance, including serving governors, former governors, federal and state lawmakers, party leaders, and other critical stakeholders from across the region.

The renewed endorsement of Anioma State at the congress signals a possible shift in the political momentum surrounding the proposal, placing it firmly within the scope of ongoing national conversations on state creation and regional development.
