Delta Politics; Beyond the Defections, the PDP’s Enduring Relevance

Response to Queen Ada Oshimili

Jude Bruno A.

While Queen Ada Oshimili (as claimed) paints a picture of political rebirth in Delta State, the narrative surrounding Barr Chiedu Ebie and the Delta Unity Group’s (DUG) defection to the All Progressives Congress (APC) deserves a more discerning analysis. Far from being a transformative wave, this movement reflects deeper systemic issues in Nigeria’s political culture where party loyalty is fluid, ideological depth is lacking, and defections often serve political survival rather than public interest.

Political Defection or Desperation?

The defection of DUG from the People’s Democratic Party, the PDP to the APC is being framed as a moral stand against poor leadership. However, it appears more as a tactical retreat rather than a principled rebellion. Most DUG members have long been beneficiaries of the same PDP structure they now criticize. Their sudden shift raises valid concerns about opportunism masquerading as reform. If governance was indeed the core motivation, why wait until electoral cycles and appointments shift before raising concerns?

Honestly, political transformation is not about crowd sizes or gatherings but about long term commitment to people-centered policies and systemic reform. The April 12 event, despite the presence of national APC figures, seemed more like a photo-opportunity than a platform for concrete policy discussions.

Chiedu Ebie; Competent, yes, but Transformational?

Barr. Chiedu Ebie’s resumé in public service is without appeal to sentiment, highly commendable and enviously rich. He played a role in the education sector and held key government positions courtesy of Dr Okowa. However, describing him as a “political colossus” is rather premature. His influence, though notable within elite circles, is yet to be tested in terms of mass electoral appeal or grassroots development outcomes.

Ebie’s tenure at the NDDC, though too recent for full evaluation, operates under a federal body often mired in allegations of corruption and under-performance. So far, there is little empirical evidence that the NDDC under his leadership has substantially shifted the commission’s standing trajectory or delivered impactful projects across Delta communities.

DUG; A Group in Transition, Not a Movement

The Delta Unity Group’s strength is touted in numbers, but size does not by default translate to substance. A group of 5,000 members in a single constituency might sound impressive until one considers that voter turnout in Delta often surpasses 500,000 in major elections. Without a strong ideological foundation, DUG risks becoming another migratory political platform where jumping between parties depends on prevailing winds.

Their rhetoric of inclusivity and “people-focused leadership” is admirable but untested. There is no known public record of DUG engaging in extensive community-driven policy development or pushing legislative agendas prior to their defection.

APC’s Gains: Illusion Over Impact, PDP’s Foundation Remains Strong

The recent defection of the Delta Unity Group (DUG) to the All Progressives Congress (APC) may generate headlines and create the illusion of momentum, but for the discerning electorate of Delta State, it changes very little. These moves, while politically noisy, fail to address the fundamental disillusionment many Nigerians feel toward the APC’s leadership defined by economic hardship, insecurity, and unfulfilled promises.

In sharp contrast, the People’s Democratic Party (PDP) continues to demonstrate why it remains the dominant and most trusted political force in Delta State. With deep roots in the grassroots, a proven track record of development, and consistent policy direction, the PDP’s presence is not just historical, it is active, vibrant, and people-centered. Whether in education, infrastructure, or youth empowerment, the PDP has laid a legacy that continues to speak for itself.

The APC, by contrast, appears more focused on numbers than values, welcoming defectors who often lack ideological alignment. Many of these individuals rose to prominence under the PDP’s platform, and their sudden switch only underscores the opportunism at play rather than a shift in vision or public confidence. The APC’s growing internal rifts further suggest that its house is far from in order.

Beyond the Drama; The Enduring Reality

While narratives like “The Crumbling Umbrella” attempt to project instability within the PDP, the facts on the ground tell a different story. The PDP remains the most structured, organized, and people-focused political institution in Delta State. These so-called realignments are less about genuine political conviction and more about self-preservation by familiar political actors seeking relevance.

Delta State needs more than political drama. Real progress comes from steady leadership, good governance, and a party that truly listens and delivers. The future isn’t in repeated defections, but in genuine commitment to the people and that is what the PDP continues to offer.

Sen Natasha’s Allegation Against Akpabio Lacks Evidence, Contains Contradictions – Olisa Agbakoba (SAN).

Sen Natasha’s Allegation Against Akpabio Lacks Evidence, Contains Contradictions – Olisa Agbakoba (SAN).

Legal luminary and former Nigerian Bar Association (NBA) President, Dr. Olisa Agbakoba, SAN, has described the sexual harassment allegation made against Senate President Godswill Akpabio by suspended Senator Natasha Akpoti-Uduaghan as inconsistent and lacking sufficient proof.

Speaking at a press conference in Lagos on Tuesday, Agbakoba stated that the claim “falls short of the threshold required to establish sexual harassment anywhere in the world.” He emphasized that while everyone should feel safe to speak up, justice must be rooted in evidence and fairness.

Agbakoba, who is also representing Akpabio in the matter, revealed he had sent a letter to the Kogi Central Senator on the Senate President’s instruction, asking her to clarify contradictions in her statements which had been widely circulated in local and international media.

“This widespread publication has severely d@maged our client’s reputation. We’re giving you time to address the inconsistencies, while our client reserves the right to pursue legal action,” the letter read.

During the briefing, Agbakoba highlighted a key contradiction: Senator Akpoti-Uduaghan alleged she was sexually harassed on December 8, 2023, yet the following day, December 9, she posted glowing tributes to Akpabio on social media, praising him and celebrating an event she attended in Uyo.

He stressed that the timing of these public remarks, which conveyed admiration and warmth, was at odds with the claim of harassment just a day earlier. According to him, this contradiction must be seriously examined. Agbakoba concluded that the situation, as it stands, lacks the legal merit to substantiate the serious allegations being made.

DOPF Calls on Southern Governors to Take Decisive Action on Worsening Insecurity

The Delta Online Publishers Forum (DOPF) is deeply concerned about the worsening security situation across Nigeria, particularly in the Southern region.

We are alarmed by the growing wave of kidnappings, killings, raping of our mothers and daughters and terror being visited upon innocent citizens by criminal elements, many of whom disguise themselves as herdsmen or hunters.

The situation has reached a breaking point and the continued silence or passive responses from our state governors is no longer acceptable.

Refund N300m confab hosting rights, Rivers tells NBA

The Rivers State Sole Administrator, Vice Admiral Ibok-Ete Ibas (retd.), has replied to the Nigerian Bar Association regarding the reason for relocating its Annual General Conference from Port Harcourt to Enugu State.

Ibas faulted the reason cited by the NBA, describing it as misleading and uncharitable.

The statement partly reads, “While we respect the NBA’s right to choose its conference venues, we find it curious that the association despite its “principled position” didn’t address the refund of the N300 million already paid by the Rivers State Government for the hosting rights of the 2025 conference.

“If the NBA truly stands on principle, it should demonstrate the same integrity by promptly returning these funds rather than benefiting from a state it now publicly discredits.”

Significant Rice Price Reduction of N20,000 Amidst Broader Food Cost Decline

Agboje Chuks

Consumers are experiencing relief as the price of rice, a fundamental food item, has fallen considerably.

Remember that the price of rice had climbed to over N80,000 per 50kg bag in March, market analysis shows a sharp decrease, with sellers offering the commodity at N65,000 per 50kg bag as of Sunday, April 13, 2025, down from N85,000.

Observations from open market traders indicate that this price correction is part of a wider trend of decreasing prices for cereals and other food products. A key factor contributing to the rice price drop is the arrival of a fresh consignment of foreign rice at Nigerian ports in early April.

This price dip is significant, representing the first time a 50kg bag of rice has been priced below N70,000 since February of this year, when a similar price reduction occurred following another surge in rice imports.

Sources report that the current decrease is likely a result of both the recent large-scale rice importations and the implementation of the 150-day import duty exemption for essential food items.

Chinedu Eze, a foodstuff dealer, commented, “We’ve noticed that importers are bringing in the consignments in large quantities.” He also noted that some dealers are accumulating stock in anticipation of potential future price increases.

Concerns remain among stakeholders regarding the Federal Government’s food import policies.

Recall that there were earlier reports which highlighted forecasts from agricultural experts anticipating an increase in food cycle prices by mid-year, driven by substantial food imports in the preceding year.

The Data from the National Bureau of Statistics on Foreign Trade in Goods also confirms a significant rise in food imports in 2024, with a 51.06% increase to N3.78 trillion.

Delta PDP Faces Challenges, As Okowa Calls for Strategic Reassessment

Agboje Chuks

Former Governor Ifeanyi Okowa has expressed concern over the current state of the People’s Democratic Party (PDP) in Delta State, acknowledging signs of internal challenges urging party leaders and stakeholders to collaboratively strategize a path forward.

The immediate past Governor, while speaking implored attendees to contribute their insights into the factors contributing to these departures and to collectively formulate strategies to maintain the party’s relevance and strength.

Though this platform has not yet unraveled if the reason for the defection was unconnected to the inability of some party members to secure appointments from the state government but facts emerging has proved that the mass defection worries party stakeholders and the leadership

Our investigation has revealed that there is a palpable sense of unease among party members regarding the ongoing defections.

Though, Several members who confided to our reporters, confirmed the leadership’s growing apprehension

No proof CIA gathered intelligence on Tinubu — U.S. Court rules

A U.S. federal judge has ruled that the Central Intelligence Agency (CIA) can lawfully refuse to release any files on Nigerian President Bola Tinubu, stating there’s no proof the agency ever gathered intelligence on him.

In a decision delivered on April 8, 2025, Judge Beryl Howell of the U.S. District Court in Washington D.C. upheld the CIA’s “Glomar response” — a legal stance allowing the agency to neither confirm nor deny the existence of records in response to Freedom of Information Act (FOIA) requests.

The case was filed by U.S. transparency advocate Aaron Greenspan, in collaboration with Nigerian journalist David Hundeyin, seeking access to documents related to Tinubu’s past, including his alleged ties to narcotics tr+fficking in the 1990s.

Judge Howell said the plaintiffs failed to show that the CIA had ever acknowledged holding any records on Tinubu. As a result, she ruled that the agency should be dismissed from the case.

However, the judge ordered the FBI and the Drug Enforcement Administration (DEA) to continue searching their archives for any remaining non-exempt records related to Tinubu that could be in the public interest. Both agencies had previously released documents in 2023 and 2024 showing that Tinubu was investigated in connection with dr¥g tr+fficking in the early 1990s — an investigation that led to the forfeiture of $460,000 in a Chicago court in 1993.

That case, though decades old, became a major point of controversy during Nigeria’s 2023 presidential election, with critics questioning Tinubu’s fitness for office. Tinubu has consistently denied any wrongdoing.

Judge Howell noted that while the FBI and DEA were initially hesitant, they eventually complied with FOIA requirements. She also directed them to provide a joint update to the court by May 2, 2025.

Delta Political Vanguard Reportedly Considers Alliance with APC

Agboje Chuks

Conflicting reports have emerged regarding the future of the Delta Political Vanguard (DPV), led by Hon. Michael Ejele (Diden), a former two-term member of the Delta State House of Assembly and ex-DESOPADEC (Delta State Oil Producing Areas Development Commission) Chairman

The DPV, who was instrumental in securing the 2023 gubernatorial victory for Governor Rt. Hon. Sheriff Oborevwori, is now at the center of speculation about a potential alliance with the All Progressives Congress (APC).

Sources close to Hon. Ejele, speaking on condition of anonymity, alleged that the reason for the purported alliance was unconnected to the dissatisfaction with the distribution of political rewards from Governor Oborevwori, despite huge sacrifice made before and during the elections

These sources claim that the perceived lack of “political largesse” was a key factor in Hon. Ejele’s deliberations.

However, other sources offer a contrasting narrative, suggesting that Hon. Ejele was not considering leaving the PDP but Instead, they assert that he was prepared to support the APC, and Bola Ahmed Tinubu at the national level, following directives from Governor Oborevwori.

At the time of this report, neither of these conflicting accounts could be independently verified. Attempts to reach Hon. Ejele’s comments were unsuccessful. Further developments are anticipated as this situation unfolds.
