Darlington Okonma, the coordinator of Delta Decides and Chairman of the Nigerian Union of Journalists (NUJ), Ika Chapter, has called for disciplinary action against student nurses who allegedly displayed disrespectful behavior during the visit of First Lady, Sen. Remi Tinubu, to Asaba for a healthcare initiative.

Speaking to journalists in Asaba, Delta State, Okonma strongly condemned the conduct of the students, describing it as unacceptable and deserving of sanctions. He stressed that such unruly behavior not only disrespects the office of the First Lady but also raises concerns about the professionalism and discipline of future healthcare practitioners.

“This kind of conduct is condemnable. It reflects poorly on the character of these students and could ultimately undermine the integrity of our healthcare institutions,” Okonma stated.

He urged the Commissioner for Health to take decisive action against those involved, arguing that their actions highlight a concerning lack of discipline and academic maturity. According to him, the incident is a clear indication of “uncultured tendencies” that could compromise the standard of healthcare professionals trained in Nigeria.

“I am highly disappointed that student nurses, who should be ambassadors of compassion and discipline, could act in such an unruly manner,” he added.

Okonma emphasized that maintaining respect and professionalism in the healthcare sector is crucial, urging authorities to address the issue to prevent similar occurrences in the future.
