WHY MARILYN OKOWA – DARAMOLA IS SUCCEEDING AS A LEGISLATOR

Agboje Chuks

The true value of a person is often reflected in their leadership abilities and how effectively they utilize their resources for the benefit of their community. While titles alone may not always convey one’s true impact, it is the demonstration of internal qualities and character that truly matters.

This is evident, as external attributes are merely reflections of internal factors—what can be described as a natural impulse. I, like many others, believe that leadership is an inherent quality, shaped by nature for future roles. However, another perspective suggests that leadership is developed through experience, arguing that no one is born a leader.

Having observed various leaders, I challenge this latter view, using Hon. (Barr) Marilyn Okowa Daramola as a case study. As the first female Youth Representative of Ika North East Constituency in the Delta State House of Assembly, Hon. Marilyn Okowa Daramola has demonstrated a remarkable commitment to making a positive impact, both within and beyond her constituency.

The Owa-Alero-born philanthropist and seasoned administrator has facilitated job creation and empowerment opportunities for her constituents during her first year in office. As a journalist who has covered her activities, I can confidently assert that Hon. Marilyn Okowa Daramola stands out as a leader dedicated to alleviating the struggles of many through her initiatives and legislative efforts.

Recently, Hon. Marilyn Okowa Daramola sponsored a bill against discrimination of persons with disabilities and advocated for the establishment of a dedicated ministry for their care. This bill gained traction due to its potential to create equal opportunities for individuals with disabilities.

Additionally, on Women’s Day, she empowered around four hundred women with financial support to alleviate the economic hardships exacerbated by the current national climate and to bolster their businesses. Such acts exemplify the qualities of a prepared leader, one who not only has a passion for leadership but also a genuine desire to support the less privileged.

Hon. Marilyn Okowa Daramola is proactive and dedicated, responding promptly to the needs of her people. Her office is always open to individuals seeking assistance. She is often referred to as the “Mother of the Needy,” guided by the principle “My People First.” This principle fuels her commitment to ensuring her constituents’ happiness and success.

Rather than flaunting her values as mere symbols, she brings them to life through her tireless efforts to meet the needs of her people.

Therefore, I urge our community and the people of Delta State to provide unwavering support to continue advancing her leadership agenda, which prioritizes the welfare of our people.

THE TRUE STORY OF THE PURPORTED RUMOR OF FORMER DELTA COMMISSIONERS DEATH

The rumor making the rounds about the purported abduction and murder of a former lawmaker, and the former commissioner for Technical Education, Delta State, Hon. Onyeamechi Joan Marakpor, was said to have been refuted by the Nigeria Police

Hon. Onyeamechi Joan Marakpor was said to have been abducted while ministering in her church at DBS road, Asaba, Delta State of Nigeria, while her Police escort and some aides were killed

It was said, yesterday, that the former lawmaker was rumored to have been murdered by her abductors who were allegedly spotted by the river bank whisking her away

While people were making speculations that she has been killed by her abductors and her body dumped by the river bank, some were also alleging that she was still alive and that no information about the murder was gotten so far

Recall that yesterday the 2nd of August 2024, the Will online news paper had written showing a lifeless body dumped at a river bank, alleging that the corpse was the former lawmaker

Vetting through the news that filtered to our news channel, Delta Decides was yet to unravel what must have led to the kidnap attack by some unknown gunmen, who abducted the former lawmaker, and if the news which broke out from the Will news paper was true

National Protest: Civil Rights Council Raises Alarm Over Attack On Members By Sponsored Political Thugs In Delta

The National Leadership of the Civil Rights Councils says the group have received  report of  attack and violence melted to its members by Political thugs led by a Bigwit Politician in Oshimili South local Government Area of Delta state.

The National Coordinator of Civil Rights Council in Nigeria,Arochukwu Paul Ogbonna Esq in a Statement on Friday ,August 2,2024 disclosed that the  Civil Rights Council Asaba unit had earlier complied with the police requirement for groups intending to participate in the peaceful protest to indicate interest by submitting a written application in his office.

“However on the 1st of August 2024 members of the Civil Rights Councils and other Nigerians assembled at the Koka junction roundabout for the protest which proceeded along designated routes with Police protection.  Upon getting to submit to the road around the everyday Supermarket, hoodlums jumped out of their car and started beating the protesters and destroying protest materials such as placards, banners and leaflets. On the process some protesters sustained injuries.

“Despite this development the peaceful protesters proceeded to Interbua junction were the protest were to end for the day but to their surprise the Political bigwit was on hand to receive them with another round of violence with his thugs. The  thugs who are now with him started to beat up the protesting Nigerians and this time around made away with items belonging to the protesters such as phone Power bank, Face cap, Bell, Phone charger and Stapler.

“The thugs were hired and galvanized by the  Politician  against the members of the Civil Rights Councils and other Nigerians.

” This is condemned in it’s entirety and smacks of criminality. For a known political figure  to come out outrightly to destroy the same citizens that gave him mandate is unbecoming and unbearable. MY LEADERSHIP AS COUNCIL BOSS WILL BE ROBUST ~ Jerry **** Says Insecurity Will Be Fought, Eradicated

Agboje Chuks

The Ika South Local Government Council Chairman, Hon. Jerry Ehiwarior has assured the good people of Ika South Local Government Area of Delta State, Nigeria of a robust leadership, and inclusion

Hon. Jerry Ehiwarior who was the immediate past commissioner for Power and Energy, and a community leader disclosed that his administration will pursue the aspiration of the people of Ika South, bringing about a robust and all inclusive leadership, just as he assured of his willingness to fight the insecurity ravaging the land of Agbor

He reiterated that, it would be easy to actualise the agenda of the people of Ika South Local Government who massively gave him their votes to emerge the council boss in the just concluded July 13th local government council elections because of his administrative expertise

Speaking in same vain, the Ika Ekuku Agbor born community leader, and philanthropist, insisted that his administration would focus on the key areas of concerns just as he appreciated the people for their holistic support

Emphasizing his claims, Hon. Jerry, itemized his agenda as follows;

“1. SECURITY
It is sad that insecurity has become a very serious challenge for us. Until recently, our people move about both day and night without fear. Today, we do not only fear for the safety of our properties/investments but our lives. “

“The people are kidnapped in their farms, working places and homes. Those kidnapped are forced to pay ransoms before they are released after exposure to brutality, exploitations and other inhuman treatments in the kidnappers’ den. Not many are lucky to return home alive. “

“This nefarious crime has forced our people to abandon their farms and other sources of livelihoods. Our people are thus exposed to hunger and poverty.”

“We cannot sit back and allow criminals to control our lives. Ika South Local Government Council under my watch will find a lasting solution to this sad commentary.”

“ I will mobilize the traditional institution, community leaders, youths and all forms of security apparatus to secure our homes and farmlands. Our people who are suspected to be collaborators will be fished out with the full weight of the law applied.”

2. *MAINTENANCE OF URBAN AND RURAL ROADS.

“I am glad that the conditions of our roads have improved in the last years though many remain impassable. The roads are needed to transport farm produce from the hinterlands to urban markets. When the roads are bad, the cost of provision of goods and services increases. “

“While promising to facilitate construction of both urban and rural roads, I will ensure that the existing ones are maintained. The Works Department will be revitalized to respond to the maintenance needs of our roads. “

3. *WASTE DISPOSAL AND MANAGEMENT

“Disposal of waste has become a major challenge especially in municipalities. Poor disposal of waste is the major cause of floods. Residents have been observed to dump their domestic and commercial wastes on the culverts and gutters which leads to the washing away of our roads.”

“I will examine the existing laws as well as work with waste disposal and management companies to eradicate this menace. In addition, I will set up a task force and committees for effective implementation of relevant laws. “

“The monthly sanitation day will not be seen as a period of rest. The period will be used to clean our homes and surroundings with dire consequences for any person that acts otherwise.”

4. *BASIC MEDICARE

“I am aware of the presence of several health centers in the various communities. These health centers under my leadership will be supplied basic medicines and other necessary requirements for optimal results.”

“There shall be public awareness on personal hygiene and disease control.
The environmental sanitation department will be given serious attention to reflect its name. The staff in that department will not only be felt in the urban areas but in the villages as in time past. “

5. *AGRICULTURE

“Until the current realities, further exacerbated by criminal elements in our bushes and farmlands, we took for granted the issue of food security. We had the assumption that we can always get the foods we want so long as there is money in our wallets. This is no longer true.”

“Aside from chasing the suspected arm-bearing herdsmen and other notorious criminals from our communities and bushes, we shall support farmers through provision of grants and subsidized inputs especially fertilizers. When necessary, we will assist our people to access soft loans from state and federal agriculture-related financial institutions.”

6. *STREET TRADING AND WRONG PARKING OF VEHICLES

“Under my watch, the menace of turning roads to markets especially in the urban communities will be put to an end. A situation of abandoning markets for roads and streets will not be tolerated. Traders who parked indiscriminately in front of the shops at the expense of other road users will be dealt with accordingly. “

7. *AWARENESS CAMPAIGN ON DRUG ABUSE

“The use of unprescribed drugs and substances has become a source of concern with attendant consequences. There is a disturbing mental health issue with dire consequences in our local government area. “

“We shall partner with relevant agencies to arrest this ugly and disturbing trend.”

8. *WELFARE OF WORKERS

“The local government workers cannot be left out in my administration. They will be consulted directly or through regular meetings with Union leaders and heads of department. I assure them of regular payments of salaries and other emoluments.
I expect them in return to work diligently. “

CONCLUSION*

“The effective deliverance on these programmes, will be determined to a large extent by the availability of funds. The revenue nets of the council will be expanded while identified leakages will be blocked. “

“Above all, the cooperation of all the people of Ika South and residents will be required. We will do everything possible to get a buy-in from the people.”

“This is my social contract with you.
Dated this 16th day of July, 2024.” he added

CONFUSION AS TINUBU GOVT SEEK MORE SHARES IN DANGOTE REFINERY

There are palpable indications that the Tinubu govt may have requested for a huge shares of Dangote refinery, which is the biggest single built refinery in the world

Recall that it was alleged that, the Buhari govt may have contributed hugely to the construction of the refinery, using the Ika Born Banker, and the former Central Bank Governor, Mr. Godwin Emefiele to actualize the construction

This may be unconnected to the delay of the production of Premium Motor Spirit, PMS, amidst expectations of Nigerians to have it available and have the fuel price reduced

Recall that immediately President Bola Ahmed Tinubu got into office, Subsidy was removed, thereby increasing the cost of the PMS, inducing hardship and hunger in the country

Digging into the delay of the production of fuel in the country, which Nigerians believe would affect the reduction of the cost fuel in the country, this medium gathered that, Dangote had not gotten supply of crude oil from local source and has thwarted production and supply to amiolorate high cost of fuel

Dangote while reacting to the speculation, insisted that NNPCL was blending products in Malta, which was why vehicles were having problems in the country

Recall also that, the operators in the downstream oil sector on monday, disclosed that they were seeking federal government intervention to ensure that crude oil was sold to Dangote refinery to avoid the importation of cheap petroleum products rather than patronizing Dangote refinery

The downstream operators also slammed the international oil companies operating in Nigeria for selling crude oil to Dangote refinery above the global market prices, describing this as anti country practices
Our source disclosed that one of the major reasons why independent marketers were shunning Dangote diesel and aviation fuel was because it was which could have be attributed to the cost of importation

The National President, IPMAN, Abubakar Maigandi, stated this while reacting to claims by the Dangote refinery that it had sold about 3.5 billion liters of refined products to Europe and other countries because some marketers were importing dirty fuels into Nigeria.

According to Maigandi, the refusal of the President of the Dangote Group, Aliko Dangote, to collaborate with IPMAN is another factor affecting the $20bn refinery.
Another source also hinted to our reporter on Monday that the Vice President of Oil and Gas at Dangote Industries Limited, Devakumar Edwin, had accused international oil companies in Nigeria of plans to frustrate the survival of the new Dangote refinery.
Edwin said the Federal Government issued 25 licenses for the construction of refineries in Nigeria, but only the Dangote Group delivered on its promise.

He, however, noted that more than 3.5 billion liters of Dangote diesel and aviation fuel had been exported to Europe by the refinery in the past few months, being 90 percent of its output.

But the IPMAN leader, while speaking with one of our correspondents on Monday, blamed Dangote for the importation of diesel by operators, saying his (Dangote) diesel is more expensive.

Maigandi disclosed that Dangote did not heed the advice of marketers that the current price of diesel and aviation fuel be reduced to beat competitors in the market.

The IPMAN boss maintained that nobody would be encouraged to import the so-called dirty fuel if the products from Dangote refinery were cheaper.
“The major challenge is the cost of the Dangote diesel. We are looking for a reduction from him. He should bring it to a little bit lower rate.

“The fact that people bring in diesel from other countries into Nigeria is his fault. It is because of his price. You know I said earlier that he should bring his price down so that he would discourage importation by the other marketers. His price is higher. If it is lower, why should people buy outside?” the marketer stated.

The Dangote refinery official had accused the Nigerian Midstream and Downstream Petroleum Regulatory Authority of granting licenses indiscriminately to marketers to import dirty refined products into the country.
The NMDPRA has since stayed mute on this, ignoring several calls for its reaction to this allegation.

Edwin had said the NMDPRA continued to issue import licenses at the expense of the nation’s economy and at the cost of the health of Nigerians “who are exposed to carcinogenic products.”
Edwin lamented that even though Dangote was producing and bringing diesel into the market, complying with the regulations of the Economic Community of West African States, “licenses are being issued, in large quantities, to traders who are buying the extremely high sulfur diesel from Russia and dumping it in the Nigerian market.”

He reiterated that as much as a quarter of the petrol and diesel available in West Africa originated from the ports of Amsterdam, Rotterdam, and Antwerp, stressing that these fuels contain sulfur and other pollutants, such as cancer-causing benzene, in quantities up to 400 times the limits permitted in Europe.

Edwin said, “The decision of the Nigerian Midstream and Downstream Petroleum Regulatory Authority to indiscriminately grant licenses for the importation of dirty diesel and aviation fuel has made the Dangote refinery expand into foreign markets.

“The refinery has recently exported diesel and aviation fuel to Europe and other parts of the world. The same industry players fought us for crashing the price of diesel and aviation fuel, but our aim, as I have said earlier, is to grow our economy.”

Meanwhile, the IPMAN president stated that Dangote refused to sign a deal with the independent petroleum marketers for the distribution of its products.

Despite efforts to enter into a business agreement with him, Maigandi said Dangote held on to multinationals whom he said were sabotaging his efforts.

“Again, we gave him a policy that he should involve independent petroleum marketers in direct purchases from him. Up till now, he didn’t do that.

“The idea is, immediately you hold independent petroleum marketers, definitely you are the one who is having the market of the country.

“We told him that he should allow independent marketers to start buying fuel directly from him, but he refused. He just holds on to all these multinational companies.

These multinational companies will sabotage his efforts because they will tell him that they would buy, but if they buy a little from him, they will go outside to buy another one that is cheaper than his own,” he stated.
Maigandi said Dangote currently sells his refined products through MRS, some depot owners and other major marketers.

“But it is better he sells to us directly because anywhere he takes his product to, independent marketers are buying it there. And when we buy, those selling it in those places will also add their profit margin, making the product a bit higher. He should use independent petroleum marketers to sell his products,” Maigandi advised.

Meanwhile, an official of the Dangote Group, who spoke on conditions of anonymity because he was not authorized to speak on the matter, said the importation of crude oil from the United States should be blamed for the diesel price.

While saying Dangote could not sell his products below the cost price, the official stated that international oil companies were denying Dangote access to crude oil to frustrate the refinery.
“If Dangote gets crude oil locally, there wouldn’t be any issue. You know Dangote is importing with dollars. So, there is no way Dangote will sell below the cost price. But these traders are importing dirty fuels from Russia at a cheaper price.

“If the Federal Government allows us to buy in Nigeria, it will be cheaper. What we need to do is just to refine and sell. But in this case, we have to import from the US, so it’s very expensive. Some people are just playing politics with this thing to frustrate the refinery,” the Dangote Group official stated.
