WITCHES ASKS GOVT, POLICE TO STOP CHURCH OVER THAT-WITCH-MUST-DIE’ PROGRAM

The Advocacy for Alleged Witches (AfAW) has expressed concerns over a planned event in Mbieri, Imo State, titled “That-Witch-Must-Die,” organised by a church, the Mercy and Power Deliverance Ministry.

In a statement released on Monday by its Director, Dr. Leo Igwe, the advocacy group urged the state government and security agencies to intervene and prevent the programme from taking place on August 30, 2024.

The organisation warned that the event would likely instigate and provoke witch hunts in the state, citing similar incidents in the state and other states that had resulted in devastating consequences.

Dr. Igwe noted that billboards advertising the programme had already been erected in various parts of the state, including the capital city of Owerri.

The event, scheduled to take place at the Mercy and Power Deliverance Ministry from 9 pm to dawn on August 30, 2024, will be hosted by Apostle Dr. Angel (Owomowomo Fire).

The advocacy group emphasised the need for prompt action to prevent harm and ensure the safety of alleged witches in the state.

“The event, titled, ‘That Witch Must Die’, will hold at Mercy and Power Deliverance Ministry on Friday, August 30, 2024, from 9 pm to dawn. The church is located along Marcon Estate Opp Monkey Village Umuodu, Mbieri, Imo state. One Apostle Dr Angel (Owomowomo Fire) will be the host,” Igwe revealed.

Highlighting the dangers in allowing such event to hold, the Rights Organisation said, “we are worried about this programme because it will lead to instigation and provocation of witch hunts in the state.

Some people may argue that this programme is an exercise of freedom of religion or belief and any attempt to stop the programme violates human rights.

“Incidentally, this is not the case. It is important to distinguish exercise of religious or belief freedom from incitement of violence, attack and murder in the name of religion or belief. Exercise of religious or belief freedom must be defended while incitement of violence, hatred and murder as in this case must be condemned,” the statement noted.

The organisation explained that witchcraft accusation is a form of death sentence, adding that alleged witches have been “attacked, tortured, or killed”. The advocacy reminded that “witchcraft accusation is an offense under the law in Nigeria.

Those convicted of accusation or imputation of witchcraft are legally liable to imprisonment.”
It added, “So, this programme is an exercise in crime.

It incites hatred and violence against suspected witches. This event instigates and sanctifies accusations, persecutions, and murder of alleged witches.

“The Advocacy for Alleged Witches has intervened in cases of witchcraft accusations and witch hunting in the state, including cases in Orlu, Oguta, Obowo, Mbano, etc. Some of the victims were attacked during or after witch hunting rallies like this.

At a recent event in Owerri, some attendees recounted horrific stories of witchcraft accusations and witch persecutions in the state.
“Unfortunately, other victims did not live to tell their stories. AfAW implores state authorities not to turn a blind eye to this

‘That-Witch-Must-Die’ programme in Mbieri. They should not allow evil pastors to turn the state into a witch-killing field.

“The Advocacy for Alleged Witches urges the police, state security service, national human rights commission, and other agencies to use their good offices to restrain Apostle Dr. Angel and his church and ensure that this attempt to incite witch-hunting in the state is nipped in the bud,” the group appealed.

SEE REASONS WHY SOME STATES MAY NOT PAY N70k MINIMUM WAGE

A review of half-year budget performance documents by SaharaReporters reveals that many states would have struggled to pay salaries if they relied solely on internally generated revenue.

The review, covering the first six months of the year, contradicts claims of improved revenue generation by state governments.

In fact, the documents show that several states earned significantly less than their salary expenditures, highlighting a concerning reliance on external funding sources to meet their payroll obligations.

Budget personnel costs surpass internal revenue earnings in several states, indicating a significant reliance on external funding sources for salary payments.

A review of financial records for the first six months of 2024 reveals that Osun State generated N20.3 billion internally, but its personnel costs reached N25.8 billion, creating a shortfall for the half-year period.

Imo State earned N9 billion, yet its personnel expenses totalled N22 billion, highlighting a substantial deficit.

Oyo State’s internal revenue stood at N28.6 billion, while its personnel costs for the same period reached N47.7 billion, indicating a significant funding gap.

Ondo State generated N16.1 billion internally, but its personnel costs doubled that amount, with a wage bill of N32 billion for the first six months of 2024.

Ekiti State’s internally generated revenue (IGR) of N10.7 billion falls short of personnel costs of N13.6 billion. Similarly, Zamfara State’s IGR of N11 billion is outpaced by personnel costs of N16.3 billion.

Imo State’s IGR of N9.6 billion is dwarfed by personnel costs of N22.9 billion while for Kano State, despite an IGR of N24 billion, personnel costs reach N42 billion, indicating a substantial deficit.

Katsina State’s internally generated revenue of N10 billion is insufficient to cover a salary bill of N23 billion and Sokoto State’s IGR of N9 billion for the first six months of 2024 is significantly lower than personnel costs of N27 billion.

Nasarawa State’s IGR of N14 billion is outpaced by personnel costs of N23 billion and for Kogi State, despite generating N12 billion internally, personnel costs reach N29 billion, indicating a substantial shortfall.

In contrast, Bayelsa State’s IGR of N46 billion exceeds its personnel costs of N24 billion, presenting a rare surplus.

Cross River State’s IGR of N16 billion slightly surpasses its personnel costs of N13 billion, demonstrating a relatively healthier financial situation.

Edo State generated N34 billion internally and spent N32 billion on personnel, resulting in a surplus of N2 billion.

However, Niger State’s internally generated revenue of N14 billion fell short of its personnel costs of N25 billion, indicating a deficit of N11 billion.

Plateau State’s internally generated revenue of N11 billion was N6 billion less than its personnel costs of N17 billion, highlighting a funding gap.

Bauchi State’s internally generated revenue of N11 billion was insufficient to cover its personnel costs of N19 billion, resulting in a shortfall of N8 billion.

Adamawa State faced a significant deficit, earning only N5 billion internally while spending N23 billion on personnel costs, leaving a gap of N18 billion.

Yobe State also faced a significant deficit, earning only N5 billion internally while spending N23 billion on personnel costs, leaving a gap of N18 billion.

Borno State’s internally generated revenue of N12 billion fell short of its personnel costs of N17billion, indicating a deficit of N5billion.

These examples highlight the challenges states face in meeting their personnel costs with internal revenue, with some of them facing particularly significant funding gaps.

Nigerian states have struggled with inadequate revenue, rendering them heavily dependent on federal allocations. To bridge the fiscal gap, many states have resorted to borrowing, as their internal revenue generation falls short of meeting their financial obligations.

Furthermore, corruption has been cited as a major contributor to the poor revenue performance of states, exacerbating their financial woes and hindering their ability to achieve economic self-sufficiency

EDO 2024: Court Of Appeal Dismisses PDP Candidate Ighodalo’s Appeal

In what seems to be loss of hope to the Edo Peoples Democratic Party, PDP, the Court of Appeal in Abuja has dismissed the appeal filed by Asue Ighodalo, the PDP candidate for the September 21, 2024, Edo governorship election. The appellate court, led by Hon. Justice Tunji Oyebanji Awotoye, overturned the earlier decision of the Federal High Court, which had declined to address the merits of the case involving voter’s card forgery allegations against Ighodalo.

The Federal High Court had previously ruled on technical grounds, opting not to delve into the case’s substance. However, Ighodalo’s appeal challenged this decision, arguing that the lower court’s judgment was flawed. The Court of Appeal reviewed seven grounds of appeal presented by Ighodalo and found them, along with the three issues of determination, to be without merit. The lead judgment, delivered by Hon. Justice Patricia Ajuma Mahmoud, concluded that the appeal was unsubstantiated and thus dismissed.

Justice Mahmoud’s ruling confirms that the appeal fails, reinforcing the lower court’s initial stance and rejecting Ighodalo’s attempt to overturn the decision. This outcome marks a decisive moment in the legal battles surrounding the Edo governorship election
